Error $5.00 1900 Gold $5 Five Dollar Half Eagle Struck on a Defective Planchet

This 1900 Half Eagle is quite an interesting gold piece.

One occasionally runs across a gold coin with a minor strike through or a minor delamination, but this coin was struck on a very badly flawed planchet.

The strip was poorly made and, likely due to contamination and to insufficient rolling pressure, a lot of flaking of the planchet apparently took place before the coin was struck.

Missing are the telltale volcanic rims that would be created by impacting its surface post strike.

This coin is not well struck, but it is almost completely mark-free, and fabulous mint luster blankets the entire coin, even in those areas missing material.

Fascinating . . .
