Error $20.00 1911-D Gold Saint Gaudens Double Eagle Struck Thru - Raw AU / BU
Gold errors are rare. The US Mint was very conscientious about not releasing coins which looked defective, and particularly those which appeared to be underweight.
This 1911-D Double Eagle weighs a full in-tolerance 33.5 grams, yet appears to be missing a fair amount of gold. This is because the coin was struck slightly thicker than others when debris was caught in the striking chamber with the planchet.
This coin grades AU / BU.
